London shoulder meeting | 15—16 May 2026

Overview

This meeting is designed for orthopaedic surgeons, trainees, physiotherapists, and sports physicians, and will provide a comprehensive update on sports injuries, soft-tissue surgery, rehabilitation, and current surgical techniques. The programme includes lectures, panel discussions, re-live surgery, masterclasses, and hands-on workshops, delivered by an international multidisciplinary faculty assembled by The Shoulder Practice.

Day 1 includes lectures, panel discussions, and breakout sessions for both surgeons and physiotherapists, and concludes with a complimentary networking reception. Day 2 consists of hands-on practical workshops exclusively for surgeons.

Ample time has been built in for discussion and audience interaction, ensuring lively debate and opportunities to learn from faculty and peers. By the end of the meeting, participants will have an enhanced understanding of key topics in shoulder and elbow surgery and rehabilitation, along with practical tips and up-to-date strategies they can apply in clinical practice.

Consultants, trainees, and AHPs are invited to submit abstracts for the LSM poster presentation prize (£300).

Abstracts should focus on the areas of trauma, arthroplasty, soft tissue, sports injuries and rehabilitation in relation to the shoulder and/or elbow.

Mr Carlos Cobiella

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, University College London Hospitals

Carlos Cobiella grew up in Spain and graduated from Medical School at the Universidad Autónoma in Madrid.

He moved to London where he completed his trauma and orthopaedic surgery training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. He became interested in shoulder and elbow surgery and had further training in this area under the care of Messrs Bayley, Calvert and Lambert at the Shoulder and Elbow Unit at the RNOH and Professor Birch at the Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit.

He is a Consultant Shoulder & Elbow and Sports Surgeon at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust. He is founding member of The Shoulder Practice, Head of the Upper Limb Section of the Institute of Sports, Exercise and Health at UCL. He collaborates closely with the English Institute of Sport, UK Athletics, the British Olympic Association and professional sports teams. He was part of the medical team at the London 2012 Olympics and is the NFL Upper Limb Surgeon in Europe.

He enjoys all aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery, including the treatment of sports injuries, arthritis and fractures and has a keen interest in arthroscopic techniques. He is a member of faculty on numerous courses in arthroscopic and sports injury surgery, both national and international. He directly supervises the training of medical students, junior doctors, a UCH shoulder and elbow fellow and is convenor for the London Shoulder Meeting. Carlos continues to publish and present research for advances in surgical techniques regularly.

Mr Henry Colaço

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Royal Hampshire County Hospital

Mr Henry Colaço is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in sports and reconstructive shoulder and elbow surgery and complex upper limb trauma. He is a founder member of The Shoulder Practice and The London Shoulder Meeting. 

He graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine with Distinction in Surgery and completed his surgical and orthopaedic training in London including fellowship posts at University College Hospital and St George’s Hospital before completing the BESS Travelling Fellowship in Paris and Lyon. He was appointed as a Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at University College London in 2016.

In 2017, he was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he is a surgical trainer, chair of the shoulder & elbow MDT meeting, lead for sustainable surgery., and shoulder fellowship programme director. 

He is a member of the British Elbow & Shoulder Society (BESS), the European Shoulder & Elbow Society (SECEC), the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma & Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA), the Orthopaedic Trauma Society (OTS) and The Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and the International Bone Research Association (IBRA).

Mr Colaço is also a Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and served on the BESS Education Committee. He received the ‘Innovation in Simulation’ Award from the British Orthopaedic Association and founded the BESS Simulation Working Group. He has developed a surgical skills course for UCL medical students and is working with industry partners to create a surgical skills simulation centre for the Wessex region.

He is a faculty member at national and international courses and conferences. He has chaired the BOA shoulder & elbow educational and scientific sessions and was a guest speaker at the SECEC/EUSSER combined session at SECEC 2025. He is a reviewer for Shoulder & Elbow and Bone & Joint Journal and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Arthroscopy.

He is actively involved in running clinical research projects and as site investigator for NIHR randomised controlled trials. He is widely published and enjoys developing innovative implants and surgical techniques.

Mr Dimitrios Karadaglis

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, London

Dimitri is an upper limb orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in treating degenerative and post-traumatic upper limb conditions. With a strong background in both medical practice and academic pursuits, his journey is marked by diverse experiences:

Originally trained in Greece, the surgeon transitioned from distinguished military service in the Special Airborne Forces to pursuing orthopaedics in the United Kingdom.

His training encompassed South East London and rotations at prestigious institutions such as St Thomas’, Guy’s, and King’s. These experiences equipped them with expertise in managing various orthopaedic conditions, particularly those arising from trauma.

During a research-focused year at Imperial College, London, they contributed to orthopaedic advancements, culminating in a Master’s degree in surgery.

Venturing to Boston, USA, enriched their skill set, as they gained invaluable insights from the Harvard Sports Medicine Team and the Boston Shoulder Institute.

A 2008 trauma and orthopaedics fellowship further honed their specialization, positioning them to excel in complex cases.

His extensive publications underscore their commitment to advancing orthopaedic knowledge, likely spanning topics such as upper limb issues, trauma, and related areas.

Presently, he served as a dedicated full-time consultant in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. In this capacity, he leverages his extensive training to diagnose, treat, and manage a wide array of upper limb conditions, solidifying his status as a respected authority in the field.

Mr Simon Lambert

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, University College London Hospitals

Simon is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University College London Hospital, Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science, University College London. He was previously senior surgeon on the upper limb service at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Trust, and visiting surgeon to the States of Jersey. Simon has published widely on all aspects of trauma and shoulder and elbow conditions, and is currently completing an MD concerning the effectiveness of fixed-fulcrum reverse shoulder replacement for the treatment of rotator cuff deficient shoulder arthritis. He has supervised MD and PhD level students researching frozen shoulder, rotator cuff disease, and elbow arthroplasty. He is the current author of the Shoulder Girdle and Upper Arm chapter of Gray’s Anatomy and the equivalent Gray’s Surgical Anatomy texts. He is co-supervisor of research into aspects of shoulder anatomy in the Department of Anatomy, University of Innsbruck.

Mr Jae Rhee

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Princess Royal Hospital, West Midlands

Mr Jae Rhee qualified from Royal Free and University College London Medical School in 2003. Following completion of his surgical training in Middlesex & UCL Hospitals, he undertook postgraduate orthopaedic training on the reputable Oswestry Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt programme. Following the award of FRCS in 2012, he further pursued shoulder fellowship training in London. Mr Rhee has expanded his expertise further by undertaking additional hand & upper limb fellowship training at the Hand & Wrist Unit in Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, as well as being awarded the EFORT fellowship where he spent time at the internationally renowned Karolinska Sports Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder & Upper Limb Surgeon at the Princess Royal Hospital in the West Midlands, where he undertakes elective and emergency surgery for all aspects of shoulder, elbow and hand disorders. He has particularly developed a specialist interest in arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

He finds research and training equally important. He has published widely including several contributions to textbooks of orthopaedic surgery, and reviews scientific articles for the ‘Bone and Joint Journal’. He is a regular faculty and examiner on regional and national courses, as well as lecturing MSc students at the Institute of Sports, Exercise and Health, University College London.
