Early intervention in hip surgery | 24 April 2026
Overview
This one-day event aims to review the concepts of early injury to the hip joint caused by morphological abnormalities and describe the development of surgical interventions to address them. It will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the clinical presentations, investigation, and management through a series of lectures and video case presentations.
Who should attend?
Consultants and physiotherapists involved in the care of such patients as well as trainees needing exposure to this area of hip surgery for core training purposes and postgraduate exams.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Mr Ajay Malviya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in the North-East of England and at Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital. He trained in the Northern Deanery and has done specialist fellowships in hip preservation and joint replacement surgery in Cambridge, London and Switzerland.
He specialises in periacetabular osteotomy for hip dysplasia using a minimally invasive approach and hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement. In his routine practice, he deals with sports injuries of the hip and has published and presented widely on the results of hip arthroscopy and pelvic osteotomy in athletes and the general population. He has completed a PhD on the role of hip arthroscopy in femoroacetabular impingement. Preservation of the hip joint is his principal philosophy but he has a wide experience of joint replacement surgery catering to the young population, if necessary.
In his routine practice, he does more than 150 hip and knee replacements annually for all age groups. He also performs around 150 hip arthroscopies and more than 75 pelvic osteotomies for hip dysplasia annually; making him the highest volume hip preservation surgeon in the North East and amongst the top in the country.
He is heavily involved in training and is an examiner for FRCS T&O. He is in the BOA Education and Careers committee as the National lead of the UK and Ireland orthopaedic in-training examination (UKITE). In addition, he regularly teaches in national and international hip preservation courses and mentors consultants setting up a similar service in their own trust
Mr Johan Witt
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, University College London Hospital
Mr Johan Witt is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and pelvic surgery.
Since 1995 he has been a consultant at University College Hospitals, London. Prior to that he trained mainly in London, and gained specialist training in Boston, USA (1989), Sydney, Australia (1993) and Bern, Switzerland (1994).
He has developed a specialised practice in hip and pelvic surgery involving all aspects of joint replacement surgery, including resurfacing, as well as procedures to preserve the hip joint and delay the onset of arthritis.
He has a specific interest in young athletic patients with hip problems encompassing developmental abnormalities requiring osteotomies around the hip and arthroscopic procedures to deal with sports related injuries. He has considerable experience in primary and revision hip replacement in young patients built up on a practice of looking after children and adolescents with inflammatory arthritis within a specialist unit.
