This course is suitable for all clinicians with an interest in spinal conditions, including nurses, orthotists, physios, osteopaths, occupational therapists and chiropractors. The webinars cover some of the most important topics in both adult and paediatric practice, including degenerative conditions and the management of spinal deformity.
We will present the evidence, discuss the controversies, challenge some preconceptions and explore how AHPs and surgeons can best work together as a team.
By the end of the course, delegates will be confident in being up-to-date with the latest clinical concepts in the treatment of spinal conditions, red flags and referral criteria, and the relevant national guidelines.

Mr Michail Kokkinakis
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Evelina London Children’s Hospital
Michail Kokkinakis is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital and an honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at King’s College London. He is the Lead Surgeon on adolescent hip preservation surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust while his additional subspecialty interests include modern management of orthopaedic deformities in children with cerebral palsy as well as treatment of complex feet deformities.
Michail graduated from the medical school of University of Frankfurt in Germany and received his surgical and orthopaedic training in the UK and Greece. He is fellowship-trained in Glasgow, Evelina London and Stanmore. He has a PhD in orthopaedics awarded by the University of Frankfurt, Germany and a PgCert in Clinical Leadership awarded by the University of Teesside, UK. He has an extensive list of 36 Medline publications.
He is member of the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery, British Society for Surgery in Cerebral Palsy and the European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society. He is co-chair of Cerebral Palsy Integrated Pathway for South East England as well as BSCOS Delphi flatfoot consensus group and a regular reviewer for the Bone and Joint Journal.
Mr Gavin Spence
Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, Evelina London Children’s Hospital
Gavin Spence is a full time Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. His particular clinical interest is in external fixation and limb deformity correction. Prior to this he was a consultant for King’s College Hospital London (Dubai) and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, treating children with a variety of tertiary paediatric orthopaedic conditions including neuromuscular pathology. He trained in London and Cambridge, with fellowships in Great Ormond Street, Stanmore, and Adelaide.
Mr Ashley Cole
Consultant Spinal Surgeon, Northern General Hospitals
Whilst on the BASS Executive between 2010 and launch in 2012, he co-developed the British Spine Registry with Lee Breakwell. He became the first Chair of a BOA group developing the newer Orthopaedic Registries (TORUS). Since 2005, he has been the Spinal Chair of the Orthopaedic Expert Working Group advising the NHS on spinal coding, healthcare resource groups and tariff. After being a member of the last Spinal Taskforce in 2010/11, he became Chair of the Spinal Services Clinical Reference Group advising NHS England on commissioning specialised spinal and spinal cord injuries. During this role between 2012 and 2019, they introduced a national service specification for specialised spinal surgery and developed the Regional Spinal Networks which have continued to flourish. He is currently Past President of the British Scoliosis Society and Chief Investigator of the NIHR HTA funded Bracing Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (BASIS) study, a multi-centre RCT comparing full-time versus night-time bracing.

Mr Jonathan Lucas

Mr Jonathan Lucas was appointed as consultant orthopaedic and spinal consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in 1999.
Mr Jonathan is head of service for children’s spinal surgery, Evelina London Children’s Hospital having been lead clinician for spinal surgery from 2007 to 2019 at Guy’s and St Thomas’.
Jonathan is a former Chairman of AO SPINE UK. He is a member of the:

Mr Panagiotis Liantis
Consultant Spinal Surgeon, Guy's and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Mr Panos Liantis is Consultant Spinal and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital (GSTT).
He is UK fellowship trained in spinal surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery UCL.
Mr Liantis receives a large number of tertiary referrals for primary and revisional problems. He has experience in minimal access techniques in Spinal Surgery and in the management of adult and paediatric spinal deformities, scoliosis, kyphosis, tumours, spinal trauma, osteoporotic fractures, vertebroplasty, infections, lumbar and cervical disc degeneration, sciatica, injection therapies for low back and leg pain.
Mr Liantis has a PhD in Orthopaedics and Bachelor in Educational Studies. He has also been interested in research and has published in peer reviewed orthopaedic and spinal journals. He is the lead clinician of the fellowship program of the complex spinal surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and is involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical student and postgraduate clinical doctors at King’s College.
He is a member of the British Association of Spine Surgeons (BASS), Society of Lateral Access Surgery ( SOLAS), AO Spine Foundation, The North American Spine Society (NASS) and Spinal Research Group at GSST

Ms Kristine Gatti
Physiotherapy Practitioner – AHH Orthopaedic Transition Service for Young Adults with Neurodisability
Kris qualified as a physiotherapist in 1995 and has worked at Alder Hey’ Children’s Foundation Hospital Trust for 20 years, working in both acute and community settings.
Kris began to develop an interest in the treatment and management of children and young people with cerebral palsy; in 2005 she began working at the Gait Laboratory. In 2006 was appointed Physiotherapy Practitioner, this role focuses on the orthopaedic management of children and young adults with Neuro-disability.
Discharging young adults and their families from the service to their GP highlighted the lack of transition and adult services. This impelled Kris to address the issue when transition became a national focus.
Kris was instrumental in the organisation of a Neuro-Orthopaedic transition clinic for young adults between Alder Hey and Broadgreen Hospital and is the lead person delivering transition preparation to this group of young people. Kris remains committed to the ongoing work for young people with more complex needs and their families, to enable them to transition seamlessly and safely from Alder Hey to adult services.
Ms Sarah Gregson
Clinical Specialist Neuromuscular Physiotherapist
Originally from Cork, Ireland, Sarah moved to Bristol in September 2000 to study physiotherapy at the University of the West of England. After qualifying in 2003, Sarah worked at Hope Hospital in Salford until moving into paediatrics at Alder Hey Hospital, Liverpool in 2006. She worked across all acute and community paediatric specialities gaining an interest in Neurology. In 2012, Sarah started in the Neuromuscular team. In 2015, she completed an MRes in Health Science with distinction. Having gained a keen interest in research during her MRes studies, Sarah took the opportunity to take up a 2 year research secondment as part of the Alder Hey Neuromuscular team, in collaboration with Duchenne UK, and continues now to participate as a clinical evaluator in many DMD Studies as well as contributing to national audits such as North Star and SMA Reach study.
