Aimed at candidates preparing for the FRCS (Tr & Orth) examinations, and trainees who are in their earlier years of training. This course is also suitable for consultant orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists in practice who wish to refresh and further their knowledge in management of pathologies of the Spine, whilst gaining CPD points. Consultant Spinal Surgeon, Royal Perth Hospital
Mr Altaf qualified from St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospital Medical School in 2002. He received the Jackson Burrows and Moreton Prize for outstanding academic achievement as a medical student. He trained on the North West Thames London rotation and achieved his completion of training in 2015.
He is currently Consultant Spinal Surgeon at the Royal Perth Hospital. Prior to this he was a consultant at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. Before taking up a consultant post at the RNOH, he undertook further subspecialist fellowships: one-year spinal fellowship at the Vancouver General Hospital in Canada and a one-year spinal fellowship at the Royal Northshore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He also worked as a fellow for three months in Lyon, France.
He has published in multiple peer-reviewed journals and presented at numerous national and international meetings.
Mr Hanny Anwar
Consultant Spinal Surgeon, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital
Mr Anwar was appointed to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in 2013, he is Clinical Lead for Spinal Tumours and on the board of London Cancer for Acute Oncology concerning metastatic spinal cord compression. The RNOH was the first hospital in the UK to install computer-assisted spinal navigation to its operating theatres and Mr Anwar has benefited from the experience. This has ensured that his practice encompasses the most modern, minimally invasive, effective, and safe techniques to achieve the best possible outcome for his patients.
He has a background in orthopaedic spinal surgery, but his fellowship training was in both orthopaedic spinal surgery and neurosurgical spinal surgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Mr Anwar has also developed an interest in the non-surgical management of spinal conditions such as sciatica, neck, and back pain complemented by steroid injections while maintaining a sensible approach to surgical intervention when it is appropriate to do so. If surgery is appropriate Mr Anwar puts forward the least invasive techniques possible without sacrificing the overall outcome.
Mr Anwar’s research interests are in primary spinal tumours, minimally invasive spinal metastasis treatment, and safety in spinal surgery.
