Funding for orthopaedic start-up
We have joined a group of investors in financing the next stage in the development of Amotio Health, a start-up-business that is aiming to transform orthopaedic revision surgery.
The funding round was led by equity investment from the Development Bank of Wales providing critical support as Amotio Health moves its technology from concept towards clinical application. In addition to ORUK, funding for this latest round was also provided by NLC Health Ventures. In combination with early-stage investors and non-dilutive funding, the company has now raised over £1.6 million to support product research and development.
This funding will enable Amotio to accelerate development of its innovative device, designed to improve outcomes and significantly reduce recovery times for patients undergoing repeat joint surgeries. Built on methods pioneered by a team of surgeons and biomechanical engineers in Utrecht, our device focuses on the safe and effective removal of surgical cement during hip operations.
Patients facing revision joint surgery often endure lengthy and complex procedures to replace implants, followed by rehabilitation periods of up to 12 to 15 weeks before the joint becomes weight-bearing again. Amotio’s patient-specific cutting and guide technology is designed to make these procedures safer, faster, and more precise — reducing risks and supporting a quicker return to mobility.
The equity investment will directly support product R&D, leading to pre-clinical testing and regulatory approval. Additional backing includes angel investors, Innovate UK Smart Award, and Welsh Government SMART Flexible Innovation Support.
Amotio’s ambition is to expand use of this technology across all major joint surgeries, and to serve patients globally across the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific markets.
ORUK CEO, Dr Arash Angadji, said, ‘We invest in start-up businesses such as Amotio that have a sound business model and a smart technological solution that can deliver benefits to patients and our health system. Our charity was founded by an orthopaedic surgeon and innovator, Ronald Furlong, which is why we are particularly happy to be supporting this potentially groundbreaking surgical innovation devised by the Amotio team.’
