Arash joined Orthopaedic Research UK in 2008 and became Chief Executive in 2016. Since then, he has been instrumental in shaping the organisation’s strategy and driving its growth, with a focus on strengthening governance and expanding its research, education, and innovation programmes.

An agile and collaborative leader, Arash is passionate about forging strategic partnerships across the musculoskeletal community to accelerate innovation and create meaningful impact in society. He holds a PhD in Medical Engineering and an MBA in Management, and serves as a trustee of the British Orthopaedic Research Society (BORS) as well as a member of the research committee at the Bone and Joint Infection Society (BAJIS).

Rozerin joined ORUK in 2025 as its Data Protection Officer. She obtained her law degree at the University of Zurich and then proceeded to complete an LLM in Information Technology and Intellectual Property Law at the University of Sussex. She has a published article in the Communications Law Journal on the privacy regimes in the UK and in Switzerland regarding public figures and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E). Rozerin is employed by a consultancy firm, Information Governance Services (IGS). Rozerin and IGS pride themselves on providing personal and professional services to their clients and helping them align their aspirations and ideas in line with data protection law. 

Lesley joined ORUK in April 2025. She qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 1997 and more recently completed the Financial Times Non-Executive Director Diploma. She keeps abreast of developments in the charity and accounting sectors and have also studied forensic accounting, mediation and advocacy.  She has sat on several finance and audit committees with other charities as a trustee and treasurer. 

Ruth is responsible for the management, strategic direction, and growth of the ORUK Education Department.

She provides strategic leadership in developing and implementing strategies and plans to achieve sustainable growth.

Since joining ORUK in November 2015, she has developed an ever-expanding programme of educational events that meet the professional training and CPD requirements of healthcare professionals working within the musculoskeletal (MSK) field.

Ruth has worked in the events industry for over 16 years, previously working for both the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) and the British Institute of Radiology (BIR).

She is passionate about making a meaningful difference to the lives of patients, and regularly takes part in our charity challenge events which raise money to support orthopaedic research.

Debbie is passionate about keeping people at the heart of what we do as an organisation and works with a fantastically supportive and friendly group of people in a vibrant and energetic environment.

During her early career, she had several roles in the healthcare and education sector, with commercial and not-for-profit organisations.

Debbie works closely with the Board of Trustees ensuring that all governance and services are not only effective, but value for money. She has had an association with the Charity for over 20 years initially working with the founding surgeon, Mr Furlong, and has undertaken various roles within ORUK; witnessing the Charity’s vision and values grow from strength to strength believing strongly that changes are best delivered in partnership.

Toby has worked in digital since the late nineties. He started his career as a journalist for The Times, and since then he has headed digital departments for numerous companies including Sky, Trafalgar Tours, and Invensys plc. He has also held the role of Head of Digital for (Beta) Creative Agency and Interel Public Affairs Consultancy. He has previously won awards from Cannes Lions, The DMA, and the Investor Relations Society for his work.

Sarah Harkness has a background in corporate finance and investment banking, having spent fifteen years at NatWest Investment Bank and then four years as a Partner in Arthur Andersen. She has held a variety of Non-executive Director and Trustee roles in public and private companies primarily in the health and education sectors, including six years as a non-executive director of JRI Orthopaedics. Most recently she served as a non-executive director on the Board of NHS Improvement and as Pro-Chancellor and Chair of the Audit Committee of the University of Sheffield. She is currently a trustee of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and a School Governor.

Helen is committed to the support of innovation for the life sciences and healthcare sector with more than 20 years’ experience of applied research at the science / policy interface and spanning research concept generation, research programme development, exploring exploitation routes, and supporting commercialisation by bringing relevant expertise together. She has extensive experience working with a broad range of stakeholders and independent advisory groups and across government departments to support Government challenges. She led the evidence development to support a number of national strategies as well as presented evidence-based findings at all organisational levels and internationally through the OECD.

Helen joined LGC Limited, an international life sciences measurement and testing company, in November 2016 to lead on stakeholder engagement activity with the charity and support med tech communities, to increase engagement with the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) programmes and infrastructure and to support the pull through of innovation towards the NHS.

Helen became a Trustee of Orthopaedic Research UK in October 2025. She is also an innovation advisory board member to CW Innovation, the partnership between Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and the Trust’s charity, CW+. CW Innovation aims to develop the Trust into a leading real world environment test bed for digital and med tech innovation through partnership with others.

Professor Mike Reed is a full-time trauma and hip and knee joint replacement surgeon. He trained in the North of England and did fellowships in New Zealand. He was previously a co-author of the trauma and orthopaedic curriculum led orthopaedic elogbook, with over 50M ops logged in all specialties. He was training programme director for Northern (67 trainees), and he chaired the education committee for the British Orthopaedic Association. At a Trust level Prof Reed has run improvement programmes in hip fracture care, infection prevention and enhanced recovery for the 2700 hip and knee replacements patients who have this surgery in the Trust each year. He is Head of Department, working with a team of 30 talented colleagues. He was President of the British Orthopaedic Directors 2020-2022, and sits on Orthopaedic Committee of the British Orthopaedic Association.

His research focuses on clinical outcomes and infection prevention, diagnosis and management and academically he works mainly with the University of York. More recently he leads the openPredictor programme for risk prediction in surgery and he Chairs the openOutcomes project.

Professor Reed is on the steering committee and executive of the National Joint Registry and Chairs the Annual Report.

Jenny is a Non-Executive Director with Medway NHS Foundation Trust. She sits on boards and committees for The Design Museum, Imperial College London’s Venture Mentoring Service, the Egypt Exploration Society; and on the global advisory board for Business of Data. She is a mentor on Imperial College’s Imperial Venture Mentoring Scheme and the Engineering Faculty’s Imperial Technology Experts Service; and an advisor to various start-ups in the FinTech, MedTech and social impact space.

Originally from Singapore, after graduating from the London School of Economics, Jenny embarked on a 20-year career in Investment Banking. Starting in Equities, she has worked across client relationship management, infrastructure, software engineering, program management, big data and AI. Her most recent role was as Credit Suisse’s Global Head of Electronic Communications Surveillance, running a global regulatory compliance platform that detects potential malicious behaviour; leveraging natural language processing and deep learning to cognitively learn human context; identify patterns to create behavioural models; and detect anomalous signals.

Jenny actively promotes education in STEM, gender equality, diversity and inclusion. She is also a recipient of the Tech Star award at the “Women in Banking and Finance Annual Awards for Achievement”.

Neil Rushton is Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedics in the University of Cambridge and Emeritus Fellow of Magdalene College. He trained at The Middlesex Hospital and became a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1975. He was awarded a Hunterian Professorship (RCS) for his work on the failure of joint replacements. He is also a Watson Jones medallist. He founded the Orthopaedic Research Unit in Cambridge that specialised in the tissue response to implanted material and tissue repair. He was first to recognise the role of polyethylene wear products in the failure of joint replacements and the first to use radionuclide scanning in the investigation of hip joint failure. He has more than 200 peer reviewed papers. He has supervised more than 30 PhD students and many MD students.

He has been a trustee (Wishbone) or chairman (Joint Action) of a number of orthopaedic charities. He was President of The European Orthopaedic Research Society and has been on the scientific advisory panels of a number of grant awarding bodies and orthopaedic manufacturers.

He is a  Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and was awarded The Chapman Medal for his development of a successful, CE marked, hip prosthesis that matched the modulus of bone.

He has given many invited lectures and has been active in TV and instructional videos.

Omar is a Life Sciences Innovation Specialist with a focus on commercialising healthcare enterprises and bridging the gap between industry and healthcare providers to facilitate the adoption of new technologies and best practices.

With a background in business development, sales, and marketing, Omar possesses deep knowledge of the medical innovation and healthcare sectors. He excels in problem identification, definition, and segmentation.

Omar is dedicated to studying consumer behavior and has hands-on experience in evaluating and crafting value propositions for products targeting multiple stakeholders. His key strengths lie in empathy, effective communication, and a customer-centric approach to achieving success.

He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Business Administration and Management from Imperial College Business School, and a BA (Hons) in Business from the University of the West of England.

Omar has held various roles in prestigious organizations, including Faculty at the National Association of Primary Care (NAPC), Strategic Development Lead for Health Innovation at Imperial College London, Mentor Healthcare at King’s Entrepreneurship Institute, and Lecturer at both Imperial College Business School and the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management.

Additionally, he co-founded Vita Health Care Solutions, serves as a mentor at MedTech SuperConnector (MSK Innovation Accelerator Programme, supported by ORUK), and held positions such as Innovation Account Lead, Innovation Advisor at Imperial College Health Partners, Product Specialist at KARL STORZ Endoscopy (UK) Ltd, and Managed Service Salesman at BSG.

Omar joined the Investment Sub-Committee in February 2026.

Khatereh is a distinguished professional with a rich background in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. She holds a PhD in biochemistry from King’s College London and an MBA from Henley Management College. Khatereh has over 18 years of experience in biotech/pharma, and most recently led MSD’s Search and Evaluation Business Development team in Europe and the Middle East, focusing on oncology. She co-founded and led reViral Ltd, securing $21M in funding. At Piramed Ltd, she played a key role in a major deal with Genentech and its acquisition by Roche. Her expertise and leadership have made her a key figure in the industry, contributing significantly to the development of innovative therapies and the advancement of oncology research.

Khatereh joined the Investment Sub-Committee in December 2025.

Khaled joined the Finance, Investment, and Audit Committee in December 2025. He is a Trauma, Orthopaedic, and Sports Surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Fortius Clinic, and The Cromwell Hospital, bringing over a decade of experience in delivering world-class care. His clinical expertise spans trauma, sports injuries, and joint reconstruction, and he has treated professional and elite athletes across multiple disciplines – including football – helping them return to peak performance.

She is the Academic Lead for the North and East Yorkshire spoke of the Research Design Service Yorkshire and Humber (RDS-YH).

My long-term vision is to innovate upper-limb prosthetic solutions that users would find fit for purpose. Specifically, I aim to approximate natural hand function and reduce the rate of prosthesis abandonment.

Sarah is Innovation Missions Programme Director for Innovation SuperNetwork and has 14 years of expertise in design-driven innovation and systems redesign. She designs and leads innovation missions programmes to build working relationships across industry, local government and research institutions to tackle Health & Wellbeing priorities. These programmes create new value chains and clusters of activity across key supply chains, and provide the funding and framework to rapidly test and adopt a range of solutions most needed to deliver impact and support systemic change.

She also has expertise in developing design-led innovation skills in individuals, and in building cohorts of innovators to embed design capacity in their organisations and networks to better tackle complex problems and adopt solutions. These have been shortlisted for Learning and Development awards, for example her Design-Driven Innovation Champions course was recognised by the Utility Week Awards.

Sarah has also built expertise in tracing the impact of systemic change initiatives like innovation missions and ecosystem development programmes beyond traditional metrics that miss much of the value that design-driven programmes deliver. Her latest work in this area includes co-developing an impact toolkit (funded by the ESRC) with funders and local government, to present alternative metrics to quantify and trace the impact of such interventions.

Professor Jitendra Mangwani is an internationally renowned and respected Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Leicester, UK. He specialises in foot and ankle surgery and has a tertiary referral practice in a teaching hospital. He is the Honorary Secretary of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. He has served as the Chair of the Scientific Committee, BOFAS and led the James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership ‘Top-10’ research priorities in foot and ankle conditions in the UK. He chairs the research committee of the British Indian Orthopaedic Society.  

He has a keen interest in medical research and education. He is chief investigator for several outcome studies on ankle fractures, Achilles tendon rupture, Morton’s neuroma and other foot and ankle conditions. He is Principal investigator for a number of multi-centre NIHR funded national studies. He has been conferred the title of ‘academic champion and honorary fellow’ by University of Leicester in the past.  

He is Editor-in-chief of BOFAS bulletin, Foot Print, Deputy Editor, Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Trauma, associate Editor Journal of Orthopaedics and serves on the editorial board of several other reputable orthopaedic journals. His contribution towards research in foot and ankle conditions has been recognised with several national and international awards, including the prestigious European Foot Ankle Society presidential prize. He has published numerous articles in high impact peer-reviewed journals and authored several chapters in books including AO manual of fracture management on Foot and Ankle Trauma. 

He is passionate about medical education and is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training. He is regularly invited as a faculty to national and international courses and conferences. He is actively involved in the training and teaching of General Practitioners and Allied Health Professionals.

Henrietta is the Head of Education Portfolio focusing on Blended Learning and the Educator Workforce at NHS England. She was previously the Topol Technology Review Project Lead and a Clinical Nursing Fellow (Research and Evaluation) at NHS England/ Improvement.  She is a Registered Mental Health Nurse, a Darzi Fellow Alumnus, and an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur and has recently completed an Executive MBA programme. Henrietta sits on the Methodist Independent Schools Trust Board and the External Advisory Board for the Digital Media Lab, Imperial College London. Henrietta has contributed to the development and publication of a variety of materials, including peer reviewed articles, three book chapters, and policy and guidance documents in digital, healthcare education, mental health and service delivery.
