Plastering skills for orthopaedic surgery and emergency medicine, 15 July 2022

Overview

This one day course is designed for foundation trainees with an interest in orthopaedics, core surgical trainees, acute care common stem emergency medicine trainees and accident and emergency nurses.

Educational aims and learning objectives:

  • Develop a basic understanding of the principles of casting
  • Acquire tips and tricks to make the casting process easier
  • Learn specific casts for common fracture patterns (distal radius, midshaft forearm, ankle & midshaft tibia/fibula)
  • Learn specialised casts such as hanging casts, sugar tong casts & thumb spicas
  • Fulfil requirement for trauma & orthopaedics ST3 application

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

T&O Registrar, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust

Gareth is currently on the KSS rotation and based at Western Sussex Hospitals. He obtained his training number in 2018 as the top scoring candidate in the national recruitment process. Prior to this he trained at UCL Medical School, intercalating in musculoskeletal sciences at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and completed his academic foundation and core surgical training in Brighton. Gareth teaches widely on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Brighton & Sussex Medical School.

Mr Tom Crompton

Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust

Mr Thomas Crompton is a leading consultant orthopaedic surgeon in London, Brighton and Horley who specialises in paediatric orthopaedic surgery. His areas of expertise includes treating conditions such as trauma, hip dysplasia, flat feet and neuromuscular diseases such as cerebral palsy.

He qualified from Barts and the London Medical School and undertook his registrar orthopaedic training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital. He underwent his specialist children’s orthopaedic fellowship at Westmead Children’s hospital in Sydney and the Royal London Hospital.

He is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery.
