Consultant preparation course | 28 February 2026
Overview
Organised jointly by ORUK and the BOA
The Consultant preparation course is designed to support senior trainees who are planning to apply for consultant posts within the next one or two years. Its primary aim is to equip candidates with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to succeed in the highly competitive consultant appointment process.
Through a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, and mock interview rotations, participants will gain a clear understanding of what hospitals and departments expect from new consultants, how to prepare strong applications, and how to perform effectively in interviews.
The objectives of the course include:
- Helping candidates refine their application strategies
- Developing presentation and communication skills
- Practicing answering consultant-level questions
- Learning how to handle clinical, managerial, and interpersonal scenarios that often arise during interviews
By engaging in small-group mock interviews with structured feedback from experienced faculty, candidates will benefit from practical, hands-on experience that mirrors real interview conditions.
Overall, the course offers the following significant benefits:
- Builds confidence, reduces anxiety, and provides authentic insights from senior consultants and recent appointees
- Fosters networking opportunities and encourages reflection on personal strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring that participants leave better prepared for both the application process and the responsibilities of a consultant role.
Format
Candidates will be allocated to small groups and will rotate through six mock interview stations. Each candidate will participate at three mock interview stations and act as an observer for three remaining stations. Constructive feedback will be provided, and there will be opportunities throughout the day to ask questions and engage with the faculty.
